Are home casting kits a good idea?

A cast done with a home casting kit!

Life casting is great fun, but I’d say a definite NO to home casting kits!

I have lost count of the number of customers who have visited me after being disappointed when they have used a home kit.
A few months ago a customer called Ruth visited me with her gorgeous little girl, Sara.
Ruth’s sister-in-law had recently had a baby and she had been excited to capture her tiny newborn baby’s hands and feet, so she purchased a casting kit. Ruth, her brother, sister-in-law and grandma opened the kit and read the instructions carefully and got everything ready.
Well… four of them tried and failed to even get one cast! That’s right four of them! They all helped. Ruth said it would have been hilarious to watch them trying to cast the tiny baby!
Also, many people visit me with an older child and wish they had got professional casts taken when the child was a newborn baby.
So, when Ruth gave birth she decided it was best left to a professional – me!
Home Kits
After Ruth told me this story I thought I would research some home kits myself. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much they actually cost. One very well-known kit casting company charges £50 for a baby foot casting kit! And what does that kit include? … Some casting gel, casting stone, and a booklet, not even a frame!
I then looked at a kit you could buy from ‘Mothercare’. Reviews were either 1 or 2 star reviews… saying things like, ‘Do not buy this kit it doesn’t work!’
Since I wrote this blog post, Mothercare have actually discontinued the kits. I wonder why? Maybe, lots of unhappy customers asking for refunds!
I do charge more than the cost of a kit for a professional service… but what did Ruth’s sister get left with? A bit of a giggle and a lot of a mess, but no casts! So that was £50 down the drain quite literally.
My Casts
For a framed hand and foot cast I charge £155. What does that include?
It includes a professional no hassle cast, quality materials which will stand the test of time, casts framed in a bespoke frame to your exact specifications and an engraved nameplate or a vinyl decal.
So which option is really the best value for money?
